Criteria for people enrolled in the GRCC Police Academy
1. Show evidence of academy admission/current enrollment
Criteria for people NOT enrolled in the GRCC Police Academy
1. Completed 12 credit hours at Grand Rapids Community College
2. Have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average
3. Be enrolled in a GRCC 2-year degree, pathway, or other program
4. Plan to work in a public service career related to criminal justice, education, or health care
NOTES:

- Application is focused on cultural competency skills, and demonstrating cultural competency skills is crucial.
- Criminal justice includes law enforcement
- Education includes all levels
- Health care includes mental health and social work

Why We Can’t Wait Fund Scholarship Fund
HISTORY
The fund was established in 2009 by Mursalata Muhammad, a GRCC English Department faculty member, and Wil Smith, her husband, a Kent County Deputy Sheriff. The scholarships awarded from this fund celebrate and honor all public servants and specifically the lives of the following family members, who contributed to public service by how they lived their lives or in their careers:
— Chet Bragg, brother-in-law, veteran and law enforcement officer
— Claude Harvard: grandfather, veteran, inventor and public servant
— Mutasha Muhammad: mother and humanitarian
